A practical guide, not a promise of magic
How do you clean up an iPhone home screen without deleting apps?
Thomas Chung ·
Every home-screen cleanup guide seems to start with ‘delete the apps you don’t use.’ Maybe. But I want fewer icons in my face, not an afternoon of deciding whether I will ever need a train app again.
Hide an icon, not the app
On an iPhone you can remove an app from the Home Screen while keeping it in App Library. Check the prompt carefully: ‘Remove from Home Screen’ is not ‘Delete App.’ Apple’s App Library still lets you find it when you need it. Start with apps you open once a month, not the four you rely on every day.
This is enough for a surprising number of phones. Fewer icons can reduce scanning and page-swiping without touching the actual apps or their data. You do not need a paid organizer for that.
Give page one a job
I think the first page should earn its space. Put your daily tools there; move occasional apps to another page or leave them in App Library. A folder should group things you would actually look for together. ‘Misc’ is not a memory aid.
If you have five half-empty pages, collapsing them might help. But a lower page count is not the point if it turns your first page into a wall of icons. Optimize for finding what you mean to open, not just for a prettier screenshot.
When a diagnosis helps
If you cannot tell which page is making things feel messy, Unjiggle can scan the layout over USB on a Mac and give you a free score and breakdown. Scanning does not remove, delete, or rearrange anything. It is a way to spot the pages and folders worth fixing first.
If you want a proposed layout after that, Pro plans have a preview and an Undo path. You remain the person deciding whether the plan is worth applying. The goal is less friction, not a machine-generated aesthetic.
Bottom line: First remove rarely used icons from the Home Screen, not the phone. Scan only if you want help seeing the larger pattern.
Apple has a guide to Home Screen and App Library basics if you would rather do it yourself.
