A practical guide, not a promise of magic

How do you move multiple apps at once on an iPhone?

Thomas Chung ·

This is one of those cases where I would be a terrible salesperson if I didn’t say it: your iPhone already has a way to move several icons together. Try it before installing anything.

The built-in move

Touch and hold an app until the icons start to jiggle. Begin dragging one icon. While holding it, use another finger to tap the other apps you want to move; they join the stack. Drag that stack to the page you want and release. Practice with two or three icons first so you can see what the phone will do.

If you only need to move a handful of apps to another page, stop here. Apple’s own edit mode is free and does not require a computer, an account, or a new tool.

Why moving icons is not the whole problem

The trick moves a stack. It does not decide which apps belong together, which page should hold a folder, or whether a page is worth keeping at all. Moving ten icons quickly in the wrong direction is still making the layout worse quickly.

Before you move a lot, name the goal: fewer pages, a useful first page, or grouping occasional apps. If you cannot say what you are trying to improve, get a better picture of the layout first.

When to reach for a Mac

Unjiggle’s free scan on a supported Mac reads the whole layout and scores its organization without touching the icons. Pro can propose a plan you preview before applying. That is a different job from dragging several apps by hand, and I do not want to confuse the two.

Do the free iPhone trick if it solves your problem. If you are staring at page six wondering how you got there, a diagnosis may be more useful than a faster drag gesture.

Bottom line: For a few icons, use the iPhone’s two-finger stack. For a layout you cannot make sense of, diagnose before moving more.
