A practical guide, not a promise of magic

Can you save and restore an iPhone home screen layout?

Thomas Chung ·

The scariest part of cleaning up a home screen is not making a plan. It is tapping Apply and realizing you liked the old mess better. That is a reasonable fear.

Two very different kinds of backup

A full iPhone backup is for recovering a device. It is not the same thing as a quick ‘undo those folder moves’ button. Apple’s iCloud and computer backups are worth having for bigger problems, but I would not use a full-device restore as my everyday layout experiment tool.

Unjiggle saves the previous layout when a Pro plan actually writes a change to your phone. That saved layout is what its Undo action restores. The free scan and preview do not change the iPhone, so there is nothing to undo at those steps.

What I would do before a big change

First, make sure your normal iPhone backup is current. Then scan your layout and read the preview. Ask yourself which apps or folders are non-negotiable. If the plan touches something you rely on, do not apply it just because the score improves.

After applying a plan, look at the phone while the Mac and iPhone are still connected. If you do not like the result, use Undo. A backup for an Unjiggle change is a safety net for that change, not a promise that we maintain a forever archive of every Home Screen you have ever had.

A better definition of safe

‘Safe’ does not mean a computer guessed correctly. It means the proposed changes were visible, you chose to apply them, and there is a practical path back. You should be able to say no at every one of those steps.

If you are just exploring, use the free scan and stop there. Finding out why a page feels chaotic does not require changing the page at all.

Bottom line: Keep a regular iPhone backup for the device; rely on Unjiggle’s saved pre-change layout for undoing an applied Unjiggle plan.
